Tamil Nadu has one of the strongest public healthcare systems in India and boasts the highest number of Government Medical Colleges (38+). For the 2026 academic session, admission to over 10,000+ MBBS seats will be conducted by the Selection Committee, Directorate of Medical Education (DME).

The state is unique for its high number of seats and specific reservation policies, including the 7.5% horizontal reservation for government school students. While government seats are strictly for Tamil Nadu natives (Nativity required), the Management Quota in private colleges attracts students from across India.

Eligibility Criteria for TN MBBS Admission 2026

Eligibility varies based on the type of quota (Govt vs Management).

1. Nativity (For Govt Quota)

  • Candidates should be a Native of Tamil Nadu.
  • Candidates who have studied from Standard VI to XII in Tamil Nadu need not produce a Nativity Certificate.
  • Candidates who are Natives of TN but studied outside TN must produce a Nativity Certificate.

2. Educational Qualification

  • Passed HSC (12th) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Botany & Zoology.
  • Minimum Marks:
    • OC (Open Competition): 50%
    • BC/BCM/MBC/DNC: 40%
    • SC/SCA/ST: 40%

3. NEET 2026 Qualification

  • Must qualify NEET UG 2026 with the required percentile.

TN NEET 2026 Counselling Process

The counselling is conducted online. There are two separate applications: Government Quota and Management Quota.

Apply online at tnmedicalselection.net. Separate forms for Govt Quota (Govt colleges + Govt seats in Pvt colleges) and Management Quota (Mgmt seats in Pvt colleges).

DME releases a Merit List (Rank List) based on NEET scores. A separate rank list is released for the 7.5% Govt School quota.

Candidates fill their preferred colleges online. Be careful, as choices locked in Round 1 may determine eligibility for upgrades.

Results are published. Download the allotment letter and report to the college for document verification.

No. Government Colleges and Government Quota seats in Private Colleges are strictly for Tamil Nadu Natives. Other state students can only apply for Management Quota seats.

Admission to CMC Vellore is through TN Management Quota counselling based on NEET rank. However, you must also register on the CMC Vellore website separately for their internal process/sponsorship verification.

If a student discontinues after the cutoff date, they have to pay a discontinuation fee (approx ₹10 Lakhs for Govt quota, higher for Mgmt quota) and may be debarred from counselling for subsequent years.
