NEET UG 2026 Counselling Process – Complete Step-by-Step AIQ & State Admission Guide

The Final Step to Your Medical Dream

The NEET UG 2026 counselling process is the final and most critical stage of medical admissions in India.

Qualifying the exam is only half the battle. Securing a seat depends entirely on how you navigate the Counselling Process. Candidates who qualify NEET become eligible for seats in MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and Nursing across government, private and deemed universities.

The process is decentralized and conducted by two main authorities:

  • MCC (Medical Counselling Committee): For 15% All India Quota (AIQ) & 100% Deemed Universities.
  • State Counselling Authorities: For 85% State Quota & Private Colleges.

Step-by-Step Counselling Roadmap

Follow these 5 key stages to secure your admission without errors.

1

Registration

Candidates must register on the official website (mcc.nic.in for AIQ or respective state websites). You will need your NEET Roll Number, Application Number, Name, Mother's Name, and DOB.

Pay non-refundable fee + refundable security deposit.
2

Choice Filling

Most Critical Step. Select participating colleges based on your eligibility. Organize them in decreasing order of preference (Top choice first).

Don't forget to LOCK your choices.
3

Seat Allotment

The software processes ranks, reservations, and choices. The result is published in PDF format showing which college has been allotted to you. You can download your Provisional Allotment Letter.

4

Document Verification

In some states, this happens online before the merit list. In AIQ, this happens directly at the allotted college. Ensure all original documents match the details provided during registration.

5

Reporting to College

Visit the allotted institute physically within the given timeframe (usually 4-5 days). Pay the tuition fees and confirm your admission. Failure to report leads to seat cancellation and forfeiture of security deposit.

⚠️ Warning: Choice Filling is where 90% students lose their seat.

Do not rely on guesswork. Get a mathematically optimized preference list.

Fresh registration allowed. If allotted a seat and you do not join, your Security Deposit will be FORFEITED. If you join, you generally cannot resign.

Final round for leftover seats. No fresh registration. Allotted by software (for AIQ) or Institute level (for Deemed).

NEET Counselling Fees & Security Deposit

Ensure you have a valid bank account for refunds.

AIQ / Central Univ (SC/ST/OBC) ₹500 ₹5,000
Deemed Universities ₹5,000 ₹2,00,000

Understanding Quotas: AIQ vs State

Feature All India Quota (AIQ) State Quota
Conducting Body Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) Respective State Authorities (e.g., KEA, DME)
Seats Covered 15% Govt Seats, 100% Deemed, AIIMS, JIPMER 85% Govt Seats, 100% Private College Seats
Eligibility Open to all NEET qualified students. Restricted to Domicile holders (Govt Seats).

Service Bond & Penalty Rules

Many government colleges have mandatory service bonds (rural service). If you leave the seat after the cutoff date or refuse rural service after MBBS, you face heavy penalties.

Examples: Haryana (₹25 Lakhs approx), Assam (Rural Service mandatory), Tamil Nadu (Penalty for leaving seat).

Common Mistakes Students Make

  • Not Locking Choices: Always lock manually to be safe.
  • Ignoring Bond Rules: Checking fee structure but forgetting penalty bonds.
  • Wrong Category: Entering OBC/EWS without valid central certificate.
  • Filling Few Choices: If rank is low, fill maximum colleges.
  • Missing State Registration: AIQ and State counselling are separate processes.
  • Reporting Late: Missing the reporting deadline leads to seat cancellation.
