Eligibility Criteria for MBBS Abroad 2026 – Age, PCB & NEET Rules

Am I Eligible to Study Medicine Overseas?

Updated as per NMC FMGL Regulations 2021 (Latest 2026 Update). Reviewed by Study Abroad Experts.

Meeting the eligibility criteria is the first step towards your global medical career. The rules are set by both the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the respective foreign universities.

Generally, admission to foreign medical universities is easier and more flexible than in India. There are no entrance exams (like AIIMS/JIPMER) other than NEET. However, strict adherence to Academic (PCB) and Age limits is mandatory for your degree to be valid in India.

Special Cases: Gap Years & Open School

Gap Year Acceptance

Taking a drop for NEET preparation is common. Foreign universities generally accept students with gap years.

  • 1-2 Years: No questions asked.
  • 3+ Years: Accepted, but you may need to submit a Gap Certificate/Affidavit (Notarized) stating the reason (e.g., Exam Prep).

NIOS / Open Board

Earlier, there was confusion regarding open school students. However, the current status is favorable.

  • Eligible: Students from NIOS/State Open Boards are eligible for NEET and thus for MBBS Abroad.
  • Condition: Must have Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English as subjects in the 12th equivalent certificate.

NMC FMGL Regulations 2021 (Crucial for 2026)
