Is NEET Mandatory for MBBS Abroad 2026? NMC Rules & 3-Year Validity Explained

The "Yes" or "No" Confusion Cleared

Reviewed as per NMC FMGL Gazette Notification. Updated: Jan 2026.

The short answer is: YES. If you are an Indian citizen and intend to practice medicine in India after graduation, qualifying NEET is 100% mandatory.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has clearly stated in the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations 2021 that NEET qualification is the primary eligibility criteria for obtaining the "Eligibility Certificate" (now automated) required to sit for the licensing exam (NExT/FMGE).

Quick Answer

Yes, NEET is mandatory for Indian students. It is required before admission and is essential to practice medicine in India, pursue PG, or apply for government jobs.

Warning: Be wary of agents who say "NEET is not required". While foreign universities may accept you, the Indian Govt will NOT recognize your degree without it.

The 3 Major NEET Rules for Abroad

Understanding the technicalities that save your career.

3-Year Validity

Unlike Indian admissions (1 year validity), your NEET score is valid for 3 Years for taking admission abroad. If you qualified in 2026, you can join in 2026, 2027, or 2028.

Qualifying Marks

You do not need a high rank (600+). You only need to clear the "Cut-off Percentile":
Gen/EWS: 50th Percentile (~137 marks)
OBC/SC/ST: 40th Percentile (~107 marks)

Without NEET?

If you study abroad without qualifying NEET, you are permanently disqualified from appearing for the FMGE/NExT exam. You cannot practice in India.

Career consequences without NEET qualification
