For Indian students, qualifying NEET UG 2026 is not just for Indian colleges—it is a mandatory legal requirement to pursue MBBS abroad.
According to the National Medical Commission (NMC), any Indian student wishing to study medicine in foreign countries (like Russia, Nepal, or Philippines) and return to practice in India must qualify NEET. Without a qualified score, your degree will not be eligible for the National Exit Test (NExT).

Yes. Qualification is mandatory before taking admission. For abroad, your rank is irrelevant; you only need to clear the minimum cutoff percentile.

The Legal Requirement
Since March 2018, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and the MCI (now NMC) made NEET mandatory for all Indian citizens studying MBBS overseas. This score serves as the Eligibility Certificate.
What If You Don't Qualify?
If you fail to qualify NEET but still take admission abroad, you will NEVER be allowed to sit for the screening test in India. You will be permanently blocked from getting a medical license in India.

NEET Score
Must be "Qualified". Score is valid for 3 years for foreign admission.
12th Marks (PCB)
50% Aggregate in PCB for Gen (40% for Reserved). English is mandatory.
Age Limit
Must complete 17 years on or before 31st Dec 2026.
Passport
Required at the time of admission letter/visa application.

Country-Wise NEET Requirement
Russia & Uzbekistan
NEET is mandatory for admission letter and visa processing. Scores from 2024, 2025, or 2026 are accepted for 2026 intake.
Nepal & Bangladesh
Mandatory. These countries have very similar academic structures to India. High NEET scores may get you lower fee structures.
Philippines
Strict adherence. You need NEET before joining the MD program. Also requires NMAT exam (internal).
What Does the NMC Gazette Notification Say?
According to the FMGL Regulations 2021, any FMG (Foreign Medical Graduate) must fulfill these criteria to practice in India:
- Qualified NEET-UG before taking admission.
- Course duration of at least 54 months.
- 12 months internship in the same university.
- Medium of instruction must be English.
